Welcome/Introduction
Welcome Expatriate! BDK&T Enterprises is very excited for you to join our Irish
operations. We look forward to working with you and to your future success as a Software
Engineer with BDK&T Enterprises in Ireland.
BDK&T Enterprises is a multinational Software Development firm with headquarters in
San Francisco, California and 10 subsidiaries operating in six countries. BDK&T Enterprises
develops, manufactures, and licenses computer software and consumer technology and provides
customer support for these products. Founded in 2001 by Thomas Smart and Linda Bright,
BDK&T Enterprises is now a publicly traded company. BDK&T Enterprises currently
employees 9,252 people worldwide and earned $7.7 million in revenue last fiscal year.
The expansion of BDK&T Enterprises into Ireland is part of the company’s overall
strategic growth plan. Ireland is the second largest
software exporter in the world and is a mecca for
technology firms, including industry giants Microsoft,
Google, Apple, and Facebook (Andreosso-O’Callaghan,
Lenihan, & Reidy, 2015). The Irish subsidiary is located
in Dublin, Ireland and currently employees a staff of 150
people.
Dublin is the largest city in the Republic of
Ireland and the capital. Dublin has strong industries
including technology, education, arts, and tourism, and is

a popular vacation destination. Dublin offers the best in

nightlife with many pubs and the Guinness factory but also offers family attractions such as the
Dublin Zoo and Stephen’s Green. Dublin is an urban area offering many amenities and lifestyle
options.
Assignment Description
The anticipated length of the Software Engineer assignment in Dublin is twelve to
eighteen months and involves writing, editing, testing, and maintaining computer software for a
corporate client. This assignment will require following the software development lifecycle
from planning through deployment. This assignment is responsible for determining the needs of
the client and designing programs to meet those needs. This assignment involves the
development and coding of the programs for this client as well as implementation of the system.
The assignment will oversee the testing and maintenance of the software programs and conclude
after successful production.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation for expatriates is determined using the balance sheet approach, as that is
the most common and direct method (Peter J. Dowling, 2017). Ireland has a cost of living index
of 116 relative to the United States and an exchange rate of 1.135 relative to the American dollar.
All employees and their qualified dependents who receive health and dental coverage through
their employment with the company have access to international healthcare coverage; details of
that plan are in the insurance section of the booklet. The company pays a standard overseas
service premium as financial inducement; however, hardship allowances are not appropriate and
thereby not provided for assignments in Ireland (Peter J. Dowling, 2017). The company
maintains a housing policy that ensures employees working overseas will enjoy the same
standards of living in the host country as they do in their home country. As such, the company

pays a standard 30% housing allowance for expatriates during assignment. The terms of the
compensation for this assignment are as follows (Research, 2019):

Tax equalization
BDK&T Enterprises participates in a tax equalization plan for all employees who accept
international assignments. This plan is ensures that expatriates will not be burdened with
additional taxation from the host country and will not profit from a change in taxation. This plan
allows the expatriate employee to pay approximately the same amount in taxes as they would if
they were working and residing in the U.S. To facilitate this plan, the company will deduct a
hypothetical U.S. federal income tax amount from the expatriate’s salary. Calculation of the
hypothetical deduction uses the maximum US tax rate based on salary, filing status, number of
qualified dependents and includes a deduction, based on the national average of allowable
deductions, for consideration of potential deductions such as charitable contributions or medical
expenses. BDK&T Enterprises applies the hypothetical amount deducted from the employee’s
salary as credit toward any U.S. federal or host country tax liability incurred by the employee
and will pay any amounts due in excess of the hypothetical amount deducted. The amount of the

8
hypothetical deduction is subject to change due to salary increases, changes in marital status or
number of dependents or changes to tax laws (Laks, 2015).
Relocation allowance
BDK&T Enterprises provides reimbursement expenses incurred by the employee, their
spouse or dependents related to relocation to the host country. Reimbursable expenses include
those related to packing and preparation for the assignment, traveling expenses and any expenses
incurred upon arrival in the host country such as meals, lodging, and transportation. The
company will reimburse expenses related to the shipping of personal effects such as clothing or
pictures. Reimbursement will be provided for shipping or purchasing household goods in the
host country that are customary and reasonable such as toys, towels, sheets, blankets, pillows,
window treatments and kitchenware. The employee is responsible for the shipping or storage of
valuables such as jewelry or important paperwork. The expected duration of the assignment is
twelve to eighteen months and as such, expense reimbursement will be limited to items that are
customary and reasonable for that length of time (Doyle, 2019). The company will also provide
reimbursement of expenses related to returning any approved items shipped to the host country
back to the home country at the completion of the assignment. Due to the relatively short
duration of the assignment, the company finds it more cost effective for the employee to find
furnished housing in the host country or to rent furniture as opposed to shipping existing
furniture. Only receipts submitted to the reimbursement department within 90 days are eligible
for reimbursement. All employees are assigned to a relocation manager upon acceptance of an
international assignment (see the contacts section later in this book). The relocation manager
provides support and assistance with activities such as arranging vendors to assist with packing
and moving, making travel arrangements, assisting with finding housing in the host country,

providing guidance on reimbursements and coordinating the most convenient and cost effective
solutions to any relocation issues.
Spousal/Family Assistance
BDK&T Enterprises wants to ensure the smoothest transition possible for you and your
family. The company has created an overseas employee assistance program just for expatriates
and their families. The overseas employee assistance program matches employees with
professional counselors trained in adapting to different cultures and who have available resources
to assist with expatriate issues in the host country. Services include career counseling for
expatriate spouses, stress management, marriage counseling, services for alcohol or drug abuse,
problems in the workplace, family issues, difficulty adjusting to the host country as well as
assistance with repatriation (Miller & Cravens, 2001).
Training
BDK&T Enterprise’s employees who accept an international assignment will be
automatically enrolled in a pre-departure orientation program that will include assignment of a
repatriation manager, review of the compensation package, the relocation process, and the
timeline for the move. In addition, cross-cultural training is provided to expatriates and their
families to introduce them to the host country. This training will expand on cultural topics
already discussed in this booklet such as adapting to life in Ireland, communication norms and
business practices. The expatriate will participate in a two-day orientation program upon
reporting to the Irish location. This orientation will be position specific and will prepare the
employee for success by providing clear guidance on expectations and workplace processes
(Peter J. Dowling, 2017). Because Ireland is a largely English speaking country, particularly in
business, language training is not necessary.

Repatriation
BDK&T Enterprises understands the demands and difficulties associated with
international assignments and have put together a repatriation program for all employees who
accept these positions. Repatriation activities, used in conjunction with the overseas employee
assistance program, provide the support needed for expatriates and their families to manage the
various transitions associated with these assignments. Listed below are the details of the
repatriation activities associates with this assignment (Peter J. Dowling, 2017). The timeline for
these activities is subject to change based on acceptance of an additional assignment or changes
to the current assignment.
