After completing this assignment, the student will

● have a better understanding of how history is present in urban and public
spaces in San Diego
● have written a brief report that provides observation and analysis of their
experience and how it relates to Mexican American/Chicana/o history
Assignment: Written Review of historical site or cultural event in San Diego area
Visit a historic site here in the San Diego area, or alternatively Baja California (​student
must contact the instructor for approval for Baja sites or any other sites​), that relates to
the time period​ ​we are covering in our course. This time period is approximately
pre-1850. You may visit a site that was founded after our timeline but please check
with me first to get permission. You may also attend a cultural event on​ campus or off​
campus that relates to the Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx community.
If you are not sure whether a particular site will work for this assignment please
verify with me before visiting.
SITE VISIT ASSIGNMENT

Answer: The assignment needs to be at least 2.5 pages in length (double​ – spaced).
Question: Does it require a bibliography or a work cited page?
Answer: Yes. You will need to provide a MLA-format works cited page for the
assignment.
Question: Along with describing the site/event and what I saw and did, what other
information does it need to contain?
Answer: Use our textbook and other course materials in relation to the event you
attended or the site you visited. Include some relevant information from the textbook or
other readings in your assignment. ​Assignments that do not reference the
textbook or other sources used will not be awarded full credit!
Be specific in your paper and provide a detailed explanation of your observation(s).
The primary connection you are trying to make is between your visit/experience and
the larger history of Mexican Americans in San Diego and more broadly the United
States.
Question: What kind of sites/event would count towards this assignment?
Answer: A reading by Chicanx/Mexican authors on ​campus, a concert by
Chicanx/Mexican musicians, visiting Old Town and its historical sites, visiting Chicano
Park and observing the murals and other sites, heading to the Centro Cultural De La
Raza in Balboa Park, visiting a local museum that has an exhibit related to
Mexican/Mexican American history, viewing a film relating to Mexican
Americans/Chicanx at an independent theater, etc.
Question: What counts as “proof” of attendance at the site/event?
Answer: A ticket stub or a picture of yourself at the event/site. Proof of attendance is
required.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. In the first paragraph of your written review provide the full name and location of
the site you visited. Additionally provide the date and time you visited.
2. In the next approximately 300 words describe the physical space of the site.

(Address as many as possible)
What did you see, hear, do, and experience at this site/event?
Who hosted the event and who presented (if attending an event)?
What was the architecture and landscape like (if visiting site)?
What type of exhibits or information was available here?
Was primary source or secondary source information available?
Were there guides or docents to show you around?
3. What connections can you make between what you learned and experienced
with our discussion of Mexican American history?
Required: Include 4 direct quotes from our textbook Crucible of Struggle
Be sure to spend some time thinking about these connections and give yourself
space in the assignment to discuss them!
Your total length should equal approximately 750 words (or two and a half double
​spaced pages) or more.
Required:
Provide a flyer, handout, brochure, receipt, parking receipt, or other evidence with
your assignment by attaching it to your written review. Take a picture of this document
and insert it at the END of your assignment or upload it as an attachment. You may
also take a picture of yourself at the site in lieu of the documents described above.
Assignments that do not include proof of site visit will receive zero points.
