Project 2: Historical Context and Introduction

Research Plan
Research Question: Family Structure and Different Roles: Diversities Mid 1900’s- Present.
Introduction
The family is considered a social unit, which is highly significant for the formation and
stabilization of any community. Despite the various roles of a family it is important to note that
families have their own distinct order and organization that has changed over the years. Both
cultural and religious values weigh a significant deal on how families are organized and placed.
Over the last two decades, the family (which is a social unit) has been undergoing tremendous
changes due to changes in location, socio-economic status and culture. Formal marriages have
had a decreased meaning with the increase in cohabitation, without the presence of formalized
unions, increasing. However, the different roles of the various members of the family have been
changing over the years. The primary and secondary sources will be employed to analyze the
research questions. Both the first and second research questions will be examined from the
primary and secondary sources.
Historical Context: Families perform varied roles and functions within them. In spite of the
changes that are rampant in families, they continue to offer both emotional, material and
financial support to children, infants, the elderly, the disable and other dependents. Different
types of families have existed over the years (Coale, Fallers, & King, 2017).
Impact of Historical Context: The role and structure of the family has been changing over the last
two decades. Inequalities in the division of labor and in the distribution of power have become
rampant in families. Changes in family structures due to modernization have had tremendous
effects on the status and structure of the family unit (Tilly & Scott, 2016).
